Frequently Asked Questions
I'm not an eventer, would I really get anything from your courses?
Yes! Absolutely!
While I specialize in eventing, many of the theories, concepts, and general horsemanship that I go over are applicable to most, if not all, disciplines. While I can't help you with your cow-cutting abilities, many of my blogs and courses will address general horse care and horse knowledge that stretches across all disciplines.
In fact, many of the lessons I've taught over the years are to general English riders who just want to become a better rider. Some are hunter/jumpers, some are dressage riders, some may jump, or they may not. But one thing in common is that they want to be a stronger, more knowledgeable, and more capable rider, whether they are competing in local hunter/jumper competitions, competing in recognized dressage competitions, or just having fun riding horses at home.
When talking about English-specific disciplines, you will be able to take something from the riding-specific topics. English disciplines have a foundation based in classical riding, which is a common thread that links someone riding hunter/jumper with someone in the dressage world. Classically correct riding, exercises, and much more will always be applicable to your riding abilities and your horse's understanding and enjoyment of the sport.
But for my eventers, fear not, there are also plenty of eventing-specific courses as well!
You're not a 5* rider, so why should I learn from you?
You are definitely correct, I am not a 5* rider and may never be. But what I've found over my many years of competing at the upper levels and being surrounded by said 5* riders is a few things:
First of all, they do not have the time to teach all of us at every level.
But secondly, and most importantly, I have sometimes seen a disconnect *because* they are so successful. They live and breathe horses, and sometimes some of them they lose that ability to relate and understand what those of us at the lower levels or those of us with full-time non-riding jobs are able to do, where our foundation is, and what capabilities we have. And even at a basic level, how to explain things to us that are essentially as automatic and natural as breathing is to them.
I completely get the restricted riding time that we encounter as non-career riders, as well as the physical and mental limitations of that world we live in. I believe I am in a unique position to take my knowledge and experience and distill it into understandable and actionable advice for the "adult amateur" or "junior" rider. Just ask my many students whom I teach in my free time on the weekends!
What is the difference between the blogs and the membership?
The written blogs I post are absolutely free and public access! I will go over some items/concepts in blog posts from time to time.
The membership program gets you access to the entire library of video courses, exercises, and much more for you to pick, choose, and watch any/all of them as you would like! Additionally, people who sign up for the membership will also have access to special bonus courses/videos/info that is not available to anyone else. Members also have additional benefits such as access to Q&A sessions, free feedback videos of your riding (for Gold members), an exclusive community page for members, and other exciting benefits!
I will release new courses periodically. Members will automatically have free access to any new courses that get released!
What sort of topics will you cover?
Blogs and courses will cover almost anything horse related you can think of! Visit the course page to view available courses, and new courses will get published periodically! An example of topics will include general horsemanship, nutrition, reaction to your aids, pole exercises, clipping, braiding, eventing-specific information, and all sorts of other topics and various information that I have picked up over the years! Content will also include Q&A's where members can submit their questions for answers, narrated helmet cam analysis videos, interviews, and much more!
While my focus is on bridging the gap between Olympic caliber coaching and the grassroots level, I will also be interviewing upper level riders/trainers from time to time to get their insights! But most importantly, I will always be addressing things from the viewpoint of the typical grassroots/adult amateur rider. I don't want this to be another site where Olympians talk about concepts that are way too far out of touch for the every day rider!
And remember, new courses will get published periodically, so just because you don't see something that interests you now, keep checking back in for updates! (And better yet, sign up for my email list to be the first to know!)
What sort of benefits can I get from your membership?
As mentioned elsewhere, membership includes full access to all of the courses, bonus content, Q&A sessions, narrated helmet cam analysis videos, and much more.
Members will get access to all previously posted content as well as access to all newly published content when it comes out!
As far as on a more personal level, I have always enjoyed being able to pass along the knowledge I have gained, either through lessons I've taken or mistakes I've made. I have taught many junior and adult amateur riders in my free time, and have had some pretty great reviews of my teaching style as I explain more than just the "what", I also explain the "how" and the "why", which is crucial for us to be able to learn and apply concepts, especially in the majority of rides when an instructor isn't chirping in our ear.
If we can develop a feel for what is happening underneath us and why, and we develop an understanding for how to fix it and why that works, that is 99.9% of riding. It is the reason why equestrians are frequently some of the oldest Olympians every 4 years. While it is a physically demanding sport, knowledge and experience far outweigh physical abilities.
My lesson students have said I should write a book with my analogies and explanations, but I felt online courses were a much more accessible and understandable way to be able to pass on visual instruction and help as many people as I can with the limited time I have! I can only teach so many lessons in a day, or I can take that same amount of time and make an instructional video that can make an impact on countless people!
How is this different from a normal riding lesson?
Well first of all, I won't be watching and instructing you in real time. Rather, my videos will cover a range of topics that are both riding related as well as just general horse knowledge. You'll have access to theory explanations, exercises, and much more.
I will cover a lot of items completely free in my blogs, but I also have my membership available for deeper dives into many topics.
Many of the online courses will focus on developing you as a rider and trainer of your horse. The videos will give you the information and knowledge of how to approach certain things.
For example, it isn't just a riding lesson where someone is telling you to "keep your hands up", or "more inside bend". The courses will teach you what it truly means to have an inside bend, how to develop it, why we do it, and how to build a correct foundation in your horse's training. I have seen way too many "riding lessons" where the focus is just on "how much bigger can we jump", or "how far up the levels can I go, as quickly as possible?". Meanwhile most instructors ignore the true development of the rider and horse.
As my students may tell you, especially at the beginning of when they ride with me, I tend to focus more on flatwork and seemingly "boring" things like having your horse react quickly to your leg and being able to control both the lateral and longitudinal placement of their body. I do this because this directly translates into the ability to jump higher, or do more complicated dressage movements.
Unfortunately, it seems many instructors do not or cannot teach this. If you have a strong foundation, it'll be much easier to progress in the long run and you will be much less likely to crash and burn when things go wrong. Plus, who doesn't want to be a more educated and knowledgeable rider and horse owner?
